June 22 – Seven Deadly Sins: Greed

June 22, 2012

GREED

Defined as: A sin of excess.  The desire for material wealth or gain, and to do whatever it take to get it.  Jesus speaks clearly of this in His address to the Scribes and Pharisees, when He said:

Mat 23:25  “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and the plate, but inside they are full of greed and self-indulgence. (ESV) (BTW: self-indulgence is gluttony)

Eph 5:5  For you may be sure of this, that everyone who is sexually immoral or impure, or who is covetous (that is, an idolater), has no inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. (ESV)

1 Cor 6:10  nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. (ESV)

Wow, it seems everywhere I look in the New Testament are teachings about sins of the heart.  Greed is no different.  It is not only a sin if I actually take things or get gain (for the wrong reasons); I could be very poor, and yet still be troubled by greed.  It is a sin that is rooted in the heart and it, too, can lead me straight into condemnation and away from the presence of God.
