June 18 – Seven Deadly Sins: Envy

June 18, 2012

I’ve been looking at the concept of “The Seven Deadly Sins” to determine if they can legitimately be referred to as that; and whether or not they could actually cause death to my soul.  Here is the list as commonly referred to today:  PRIDE, ENVY, WRATH, GLUTTONY, LUST, GREED, and SLOTH.

Envy is defined as resentment that occurs when a person lacks another’s (perceived) superior quality, knowledge, achievement, experience or possession and wishes that the other lacked it.  We are not talking only about wishing for something that others have; rather, envy can be associated with any of these things.

Paul lists envy as one of the sins that was worthy of death… look at:

Rom 1:29  “Being filled with all unrighteousness, fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, debate, deceit, malignity; whisperers…”

James wrote in James 4:5

Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?

James supports the idea that I, from the heart, have a tendency to lust, to envy.   In verse 7, he goes on to say that I must submit myself to God and not my fleshly desires.

Envy is clearly not of God, but is rooted in my own desires.   A heart of envy is legitimately a sin that will lead to eternal damnation.
