June 17 – Seven Deadly Sins: Pride

June 17, 2012

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Pro 16:18

Pride defined is an excessive belief in one’s own abilities; it refers to an inflated sense of one’s personal status or accomplishments.  It is being more proud of yourself than you ought.

When one of us boys would begin to boast or brag about some accomplishment, our dad would remind us of its inappropriateness by telling us, “Don’t break you arm.”  He would then demonstrate awkwardly reaching over his shoulder and patting himself on the back.  He made his point.

Paul, writing to Timothy regarding the qualities of a Bishop, wrote:

“Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.” 1Tim 3:6

I know there is a greater context to this passage, but notice what he said:  pride will lead a novice to be lifted up; yet in reality, he falls into the condemnation of the devil.

John writes in:

“For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.” 1Jn 2:16

Pride is not of the Father.  Pride is legitimately a sin.  But more than a specific sin, it is a sin of the heart that leads to destruction.

The only way to deal with pride in my heart is to learn humility and to be clothed with it.  Only then will I be able to be pleasing to God.  Peter said that God gives His grace to those who are humble.  Frankly, those are the only ones He can use.  If I want God working in my life; if I want to be free from a prideful heart; I must be humble, or be humbled.  Either way, it is the only way to offset the sin of Pride.
