May 23 – Are You Good Enough?

May 23, 2012

I saw this on a program where Kirk Cameron was asking people on the street questions, such as what is below.  The following is not exactly what he did, but I was so impressed by the format used, I have committed to use the following when I have the opportunity.  So if you are not a Christian today, please let me ask:

Where will you go when you die, Heaven or Hell?  Can I ask you a few questions? The only requirement is you must answer honestly between you and God.

Do you believe in Heaven? (presumed answer “yes”)

Where do you think you will go when you die? (presumed answer, “Heaven”)

Who goes to Heaven? (presumed answer “good people”)

Who goes to Hell? (presumed answer “bad people”)

Are you a good person?  Are you good enough to get into Heaven?  Let me ask you a few questions, but you must be absolutely honest with yourself…

Are you familiar with the Ten Commandments? They were the laws given to Moses for the Children of Israel to obey:  things like not bearing false witness and stealing.  Most of these laws have been brought over to the New Testament for Christians today.  The Ten Commandments (especially those that deal with our relationship with one another) tell us what God considers to be sin.  Do you think it is important to know what things God considers sin?  Of course.  Remember, if we have broken laws of God, then we are sinners, and our sin separates us from Him (Isa. 59:2).

1 John 3:4 Sin is the transgression of the Law.

Let me begin by asking, have you ever told a lie?  (answer) What do you call someone who tells lies? A liar.

Have you ever stolen something? (answer)  What do you call people who steal things? A thief.

Have you ever used the name of the Lord in vain? If so, then you must know that God considers that blasphemy.

One more… the Ten Commandments say to not commit adultery.  Jesus said, “If you look on someone with lust in your heart, you have then committed adultery in your heart.”  Have you ever looked at someone with lust?  Jesus called this adultery.

If you said yes to these questions, then, by your own admission, (I’m not judging you) you’re a: lying, thieving, blasphemous, adulterer.

This doesn’t sound like such a good person does it?  My friend, your “good” living will not be good enough to save you.  My best and your best is completely and utterly insufficient to secure our eternal reward in Heaven.  What you need is a Savior.  What I need is a Savior.  And my friend, you have one who has chosen to save you.  God said what is required of you is faith:  a faith that will respond in obedience to the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.

I will continue this thought tomorrow, Lord willing.  But please… diligently pursue what God would have you do.  Listen to God’s word and be willing to submit your will to His.
